Northland Tool & Electronics is proud to be able to provide spindle repair and spindle rebuilding services across the United States and beyond. Thanks to our blog, we are able to show you images and share stories about spindle repairs such as this Weiss Bridgeport Spindle Repair which came from Knoxville, TN. Or this Mori Seiki CL203B Spindle Repair that came from Chicago, IL.

    Mitsubishi Spindle Repair

Mitsubishi machine tool referred an aerospace customer to us. The customer had sent the large milling spindle to one of our competitors and the spindle failed shortly after installation. Our spindle repair competitor refused to cover the spindle under warranty even though the spindle failed within days of the installation.

When the spindle arrived we were tasked with finding the cause of failure. Here is what we found:

The front shaft journal was egg shaped and badly scored causing stress to the bearing

    Shaft Damage

The front housing was badly egg shaped and scored causing stress to the bearing

    Housing Damage

The damage to the shaft and housing were indicative of extremely poor bearing installation practices.

The bearing spacers were scored during the installation causing a non-parallel condition which leads to premature bearing failure.

This spindle had a hydraulic rotor. It was also installed improperly causing scoring to the shaft and rotor and bending the shaft.

The rear cover was in contact with the rear nut causing metal debris to enter the bearings.

The bearings were not installed in the proper orientation causing a lack of lubrication to the front quad set of bearings.

As you can see our competitor was not equipped to perform this repair and actually caused additional damage to the spindle when they worked on it. We have been repairing spindles for over thirty one years and have gained the knowledge and equipment to perform your repair properly. Don’t loose money and machine production time to a company who offers empty promises that they are qualified. Ask for references, warranty policy and make sure you feel comfortable with the company you’re dealing with before you send the spindle for repair.

    Omni Turn Spindle Repair

    Omni Turn Spindle Repair

    Lathe

    4,000 rpm

We received this from a company that produces precision parts for the medical, automotive and electronics industries. The spindle had 70 microns of run out in the taper. The customer needed better run out in order to provide their customers with quality parts.

It was determined that the taper would need grind, chrome plate and finish grind. The shaft was sent into our grinding department and they were able to bring the taper back to 2 microns of run out. After assembly and inspection the spindle was sent to the customer. They were very satisfied with the run out on the spindle and its performance in the machine.

    Akira Seiki 12,000 rpm

    Akira Seiki

    12,000 rpm

This Akira Seiki spindle was sent in from an aerospace defense company. They were having finish problems and need to hold tight tolerances. The rear bearings had failed due to coolant contamination.  We recommended that they check their system to help prevent any future contamination failures. We cleaned, replaced bearings, adjusted preload, balanced and did our break in period. The final QC checked taper run out, taper contact, test bar run out, draw-bar force, and end-play. The spindle passed quality control and was sent to the customer. Their finish problems are now gone.

    Pibo Multi Spindle Repair

    Pibo Multi Spindle Rebuild

Our customer contacted Northland Tool to discuss the repair of their Pibo Multi spindle heads. They were using the OEM in Europe for spindle repair but the deliveries were in excess of 6 to 8 weeks and the pricing was near the cost of a replacement spindle system. When we received their first spindle system for evaluation we reviewed the repair options with them, the cost and lead times they can expect from Northland Tool.

We had to repair some major damage to the aluminum housings. The labyrinth systems for the front of the spindles were worn and not functioning to their full capacity. This let coolant contamination enter through the front and ruin the front bearings.

We repaired the damage and rebuilt the spindle which was shipped 2 weeks after we received approval. The cost of the repair was less than 50% of the price they had been paying the OEM.

    Campbell Grinder Spindle
This GMN spindle is used in a Campbell Grinder. Our incoming evaluation showed the bearings were contaminated with part coolant. We reviewed the different techniques we could used to help prevent contamination with our customer and decided on what would work best in their application. Years later this spindle is still running in the machine with no indication that contamination has entered the spindle.

    20,000 rpm
    Grease lubricated
This Robodrill spindle is from a customer that we initially helped by trouble shooting their spindle problems and since then we have done all their repairs for several years. . Before they used us for repair they were exchanging spindles with the OEM. They were not happy with the price, delivery and they were having part quality issues. We did an on site evaluation of their process and found high vibration on the OEM exchange spindles. The OEM was not sending the spindles to them with the front balance ring installed. The customer was forced to remove the ring from the bad spindle and use it on the replacement. This ment the balance was never to spec as the spindle must be trim balanced as an assembly on a proper test stand. Balancing a spindle in the machine is extremely difficult because the spindle is now rigid mounted in the machine and the balancing probes have a difficult time finding the correct phase angle and amplitude of the imbalance. Once we addressed the balance issue the part quality problems disappeared. We are able to keep our customer running with our quick repair times and our pricing is less than the OEM.

    Belt driven
    ID grinding spindle
The cause of failure of this spindle was coolant contamination and a worn tooling taper. We like a piece of our customers tooling with every repair we do. It allows us to do a more comprehensive check on not only the spindle but the influence the tooling mating surfaces may be having on the performance of the spindle.  Our evaluation showed that the customers tooling had worn over time and we recommended replacing the critical wheel holders. Our customer called us after they installed the spindle thanking us for giving them a grinder that performs like it was new.

    Fidia 5 axis machine

Our customer was having frequent spindle failures on their Fidia 5 axis milling machines. The lead times and price for spindle repair from Fidia were not acceptable to our customer as they experienced a large amount of machine downtime and costly repairs. We were able to expedite their repairs when needed and our cost was less than half of the OEM.

We also worked closely with them to determine causes of failure and provide solutions that extend the spindle life.

    HMC 200

    2,400 rpm
    50 Taper
This spindle had a damaged taper, 6 to 8 microns TIR, drive dog damage, damaged seal area, and bearing shoulders that had run out. We were able to fix all the shaft dimensions with our Kellenburger ID/OD grinder. We manufactured a new drive dog and then assembled the rest of the spindle with new seals and bearings. The spindle is currently in the machine running and our customer says its making the best parts it has ever made.
