    Milltronics VM17 Spindle Repair

This is a spindle made by Setco for a Milltronics machine. The #3 bearing of the front tri-set failed. The manufacturer or the previous rebuilder did not set the spacers correctly for the front bearing set. They had the spacers set for a much heavier preload than the speed of the spindle would allow. This caused heat and premature bearing wear that eventually lead to the failure of the spindle assembly. The taper also had 8 microns of run out.

Northland Tool kiss ground the taper and reworked the spacers to give the front tri-set of bearings the proper preload. We assembled the spindle and test ran it on our test stand at the top operational speed of 8000 rpm.

The rear bearing seized in this Jager spindle causing damage to the spindle housing. The front housing bore was also over sized. Northland Tool ground plate ground both housing bores to bring them back to the proper fits for the bearings. We also rebuilt the tool change system bringing the tool retention force back to specification.

The taper of this spindle had build up causing tool run out. The front bearings were contaminated and the front housing was over sized. All these factors contributed to bad part finish that eventually lead to our customer to send the spindle to Northland Tool for repair.

We ground plate ground the front housing and the 40 taper in our grinding department. The spindle was then assemble in our clean room. The final quality test showed less than 2 microns repeatable run out on a 12 inch test bar over multiple tool changes. This was exactly what our customer needed for his process. Conversion from ceramic to steel
One of our long time customers had this spindle fail recently. They use the spindle to rough out parts and are only running it at a fraction of its top rated speed. We discussed the repair with them and decided that replacing the ceramic bearings with steel would not only save them money but would increase the spindles lifespan in the machine. The steel balls in the bearings are less likely than their ceramic counterparts to brinell the raceways during high load situations.

This spindle was exchanged with the OEM the last time it failed. Our customer came to us because it failed prematurely and the OEM would not cover the repair under warranty.

When we received the spindle and evaluated it we determined that when the spindle was exchanged the new spindle they installed had air purge capabilities. Their machine did not have this option and the OEM did not plug the air input hole. This gave coolant a direct path to the bearings and led to the spindle failure.  We placed a removable plug in the air purge and gave instructions to our customer for the installation of an air purge system.

    Gamfior ID grinding spindle
This is a 75,000 rpm ID grinding spindle manufactured by Gamfior and relabled by GTI Spindle. Our incomming evaluation showed bearing wear and an oversized pilot. We ground plate ground the pilot and assembled the spindle in our clean room. It was then test run at 75,000 rpm and it passed our final QC requirements.

This spindle was crashed causing the bearings to brinell. This spindle was critical to our customers process and they called us for an immediate turn around. We were able evaluate the spindle the day it was delivered. Our technician worked overnight assembling the spindle. The parts that were needed were pulled from our large stock of bearings and spindle parts inventory. Our customer was able to pick this spindle up at 6:00 am the next day. We saved our customer valuable production time and most likley retained their customer for them.

Our customer was having issues with the repair quality and longevity of the repairs from their previous vendor. We evaluated the spindles and found that many of the critical bearing surfaces were far out of ISO specifications. It appeared that the previous rebuilder was only changing bearings during the repair and not completely evaluating the spindles for causes of failure. Once we rebuild the spindles to the proper specifications they continue to run several years later on our single repair.

The owners of this spindle started to repair the spindle by himself and quickly abandoned that thought as it did not go smoothly for them. We needed to re-qualify a few areas of the shaft and housing caused by improper dis-assembly techniques. We were able to salvage the spindle and within 5 days our customer was up and running. They have determined that Northland Tool & Electronics will be their rebuilder for any spindles in the future.

High speed ID grinding spindles are subjected to many factors that decrease their lifespan. Speed, contamination, overloading and crashes to name a few. We can work with you to give you a better understanding of these factors and what you can and can not control.
