    This GMN Spindle is an tool and cutter grinder and runs at 10,000 rpm. This is one the smaller spindles I’ve seen in the shop since last February when I started here. This spindle has a special face to taper contact similar to the BigPlus taper which helps prevent tool chatter. I was able to snap some shots of Denton setting up the spindle on the test stand and running it up:

    This customer was referred to us by another of our customers. This spindle had been repaired several years ago and during that repair the taper was kiss ground.     This spindle was crashed causing damage to the front bearings and the BIG PLUS taper. We needed to grind plate grind the taper to bring it back to manufacturers specifications.
    Our final QC showed we had less than 2 microns run out on a 13 inch BIG PLUS test bar that repeated over 20 tool changes. The only way to achieve this type of accuracy is to have all the required BIG PLUS test tooling and a close working relationship with BIG PLUS.
    Our competition claims to be able to repair BIG PLUS spindles. However, recently we have found several spindles we have had to rebuild after our competition has worked on them because they really have no understanding of the tooling interface and they are not equipped to test the tooling interface. If you need your BIG PLUS spindle repaired always ask the rebuilder if they are certified and for proof they posses the proper test tooling. You will save yourself a lot of aggravation.     BIG PLUS 50 taper had run out and only 25% contact. Rear housing out of ISO spec.

    - We ground plate ground the taper to BIG PLUS specifications and ground plate ground the rear housing. We were able to get 95% taper contact and 95% face contact.  Final QC with certified BIG PLUS tooling showed less than 3 microns run out at the end of a 12″ test bar that repeated for over 20 tool changes.

    Evaluation showed the main cause of failure was bearing contamination that came through the front labyrinth. The front housing was 30 microns over sized and the taper had 15 microns run out.

    We reworked the labyrinth and adjusted it for the proper gap. We ground plate ground the front housing and the taper. The spindle was the rebuilt, test run and balanced. View Our Mori Seiki Spindle Repair Page Here.

    Grease injected lubrication

    The #2 port for the grease injection of the front bearings was plugged with dried grease. This caused the #1 bearing to receive 2 times more than the recommended lubrication. The #1 bearing eventually failed from heat caused by plowing the grease.

    Our customer was concerned that the design flaw in the lubrication system would cause additional spindle failures. We redesigned the spindle and the bearing compliment to eliminate that possibility.  Our redesign also cuts the repair costs by 50% as it eliminates the need for OEM proprietary parts! Visit Our Matsuura Page Here

    This customer runs their Matsuura ES450H spindles at maximum rpm with the maximum feed rates possible. They know that this will reduce the spindle life but when taking the increased part output into consideration the process was deemed cost effective. As the repair costs from the OEM increased the profitability was questioned. When Northland Tool made our proposal we were able to reduce their repair costs per spindle by 50%. Our customer has also informed us that the Northland Tool repairs are lasting at least 50% longer than the OEM repairs. The customer is also saving on removal and installation costs as Northland Tool allows them to perform the removal and installation themselves and still provides a 1 year warranty. The machine distributor mandates they pay them to remove and install all the spindles or they will not provide a warranty. Visit Our Matsuura Page Here



    Identifying a BIG PLUS Spindle

    We are often asked to identify if our customers spindles are capable of using BIG PLUS tooling. Most manufacturers place labels on their  machines with the BIG PLUS logo if the spindle is made for BIG PLUS. Unfortunately spindles are exchanged, repaired by spindle repair companies who do not rebuild them to BIG PLUS specifications, on site taper grinds are performed and several other factors can cause a spindle to not be fully capable of giving you all the advantages of the BIG PLUS tooling.

    Northland Tool & Electronics will check your spindles with our factory supplied test tooling to make sure you are getting maximum performance from your BIG PLUS interface and spindle. We can also perform these tests in your facility and give you a report on your spindle condition as well as run out repeatability. We can customize our program to identify many aspects of your spindle performance that may effect your part quality.

    OKK VP60 BIG PLUS taper repair

    The incorrect tool was inserted during tool change causing the spindle to crash. This caused the tool to spin in the taper shearing off one integral drive dog and severely damaging the second. The BIG PLUS taper and face were also severely damaged. We were able to repair the drive dogs, taper and face in our grinding/machining departments using certified BIG PLUS gauging. We then rebuilt the spindle to strict BIG PLUS specifications. Our repair provided our customer with a spindle that meets or exceeds OEM specifications for considerably less money than their only other option of an OEM replacement spindle. Our expedited service reduced machine downtime by 16 weeks over the OEM option.
