This grinding spindle came to us with the power leads cut off the stator. The incoming inspection showed contamination in both the front and rear bearings. When the customer cut the wires they were no longer able to connect the spindle as it is wound for high or low voltage. We were able to trace the leads and label them for easier installation. We assembled the spindle in our clean room with ABEC 7 bearings. After the completion of the assembly our technicians test ran the spindle at the top rated speed and trim balanced it. It was then put through our comprehensive final quality check and was approved for shipment.

This spindles front taper had worn to the point of needing a grind plate grind to bring it back to OEM specifications. The rear taper had run out but we were able to kiss grind it true. After we completed the work in our grinding department we manufactured replacement drive pins and assembled the spindle in our clean room. It was then broken in fully and test run at its maximum running speed. Vibration readings were taken and compared to our final QC criteria. All run out were check and passed. The spindle was then shipped to our customer.

This Normac spindle is commonly used as a dressing spindle in the cutting tool manufacturing industry. We repair this type and many similar types for a variety of customers. The key components we look to improve during the rebuild is run out, contamination prevention, electrical stability and keeping the repairs affordable. We stock many of the parts needed for these repairs to reduce the repair turnaround and cost.

The grease in the front bearings was washed out from coolant contamination. This causes a lack of lubrication that leads to heat and ultimately bearing failure. Fortunately the rest of the spindle checked out well during our repair evaluation. We were able to rebuild this spindle as a “straight repair” meaning no additional work was needed aside from our normal rebuilding procedures. The spindle was shipped two weeks from the approval date and is at the customers facility.

The rear shaft threads on this spindle were worn and were cut into the pulley mounting surface. This caused irregular run out on the pulley resulting in vibration. We fixed the pulley mounting surface and cut new threads in our machining and grinding departments. We then assembled the spindle in our clean room, test ran and put it through our final quality check. The spindle is as good as new which is a good thing as no replacement spindles were available for the machine.

This spindle failed from contamination to the front set of bearings. The taper also had 5 microns of run out. To prevent future failures from contamination Northland Tool re-engineered the front of the spindle adding a seal. This inexpensive modification could potentially increase the spindles life by many years. We then kiss ground the spindles tooling taper in our grinding department. Our technicians rebuilt the spindle to exacting tolerances and it was shipped back to our customer for installation.

The grease was completly washed from the bearings by part coolant causing the bearings to fail.
We remanufactured the front labyrinth and replaced the open bearings with a sealed bearing design. By incorporating these contamination prevention design upgrades their spindles have been lasting at least 3 to 4 times longer than before the upgrade. Their spindle life is now measured in years instead of months.

This spindle failed from contamination and had 8 microns run out on the taper. Our incoming evaluation showed the contamination was entering through the rear of the spindle. We reworked the rear of the spindle to keep the same functionality but remove the possibility of contamination entering the spindle. We kiss ground the taper and assembled the spindle.

This spindle failed from coolant contamination and had 10 microns of run out in the taper. We kiss ground the taper on one of our Kellenburger ID/OD grinders and assembled the spindle. Our outgoing QC showed less than a micron of run out on the taper.
