    15,000 rpm

A spindle failing during a customer’s busy time is not good thing. Our customer called and needed this spindle repair done as soon as possible. We received the spindle and found that the shaft nose OD rubbed out on the front cover. The shaft taper had 18 microns of run out and the front bearings were contaminated. The spindle would need grind, chrome plate and finish grind to the taper, a kiss grind to the OD nose and front cover. We expedited the shaft rework through our Kellenberger grinding department. The shaft was then hand carried to the platers and picked up the following day. The shaft was put on the Kellenberger grinder the same day that it was picked up. Our spindle repair technician replaced the drawbar, springs, grippers, bearings and orings. The taper now has only 1 micron of run out. All out going test show that the spindle had good balance and drawbar force. The customer received their spindle repair back within 4 days.

    10,000 rpm

This customer called and needed a spindle repair done within 5 days. We received the spindle and expedited the breakdown process. The rear roller bearing cage had failed causing the rolling elements to collide causing the spindle seizure. The Belleville washers for the drawbar were damaged and the taper was worn. The spindle repair was evaluated, quoted and approved within 24 hours. The shaft was kiss ground in our grinding department that specializes in spindle repair applications the same day the spindle was approved. Then the spindle went to our assembly area where the technician replaced the bearings and bellevilles. The technician adjusted preload, assembled and ran the spindle. Our quality control department inspected the spindle. The spindle repair was approved by the QC inspection process. The customer was very happy with our quick turn service and how we expedited everything through our facility.

    Mazak CNC-9 Spindle

    CNC-9

    4,000 rpm

Due to economic times this customer was going to rebuild this Mazak CNC-9 spindle themselves. They disassembled the spindle and found that when the spindle seized up the bearings spun on the shaft causing damage. They decided to send the spindle in because they were not equipped to repair the shaft. The shaft is a very critical part of the spindle and if it is out of tolerance putting new bearings back on the shaft will not make the spindle life last any longer. Each part must be at or within the ISO tolerances allowed. This customer made the smart choice and is now up and running with a spindle that is at OEM specifications.

    GMN TSSV120-60000-5  Spindle Repair

This spindle came to us and was needed back at the customers ASAP. We disassembled and inspected the spindle. All critical spindle components passed quality control inspections except the taper that had 4 microns of run out. Additionally, when we checked the customers tooling we found that it had 30 microns of run out. We contacted the customer and it was determined that the tooling would need a kiss grind.

We kiss ground the tooling, adjusted preload and balanced the spindle. Final quality control showed that the tooling taper now had 3 microns of run out, well within the acceptable range of our customer’s tolerances. The customer had his spindle back within 3 business days. We were able to perform such a quick turn around because we currently employee two certified technicians to run our precision Kellenberger grinders.

    12,000 rpm

The rear roller bearing failed in this spindle. The tooling taper had 9 microns of run out and needed to be reworked.

This machine was an intricate part of our customers production process and they could not have the machine down for to long. We worked with them to make sure we had the bearings needed for the repair in stock when the spindle arrived. We were able to rework the taper in our grinding department the day the spindle was approved. In fact the spindle was in our clean room being assembled before the end of the approval day. The next day the repair was completed, test run and passed our strict final QC by noon. The spindle shipped that day and our customer was up and running within two days of removing the spindle.

    6,000 rpm milling spindle
Our customer had difficulty finding support from the OEM regarding spindle repair. They are also a small shop and this machine is an important part of their production capacity. The damage found in the spindle was significant: Failed rotary union, damaged drawbar, failed grippers, badly damaged taper from tool spinning, broken drive dogs etc.
Due to the extent of the work needed to repair the taper we quoted 10 working days to repair the spindle. We were able to ship in 8 working days getting our customer up and running. We realize the importance of your machines and work with you to make sure you get the best service possible.

We were able evaluate the spindle the day it was delivered. Our technician worked overnight assembling the spindle. The parts that were needed were pulled from our large stock of bearings and spindle parts inventory. Our customer was able to pick this spindle up at 6:00 am the next day. Grinding spindle
This spindle needed fresh bearings and kiss grinds to both tapers to bring it back to optimum performance levels. We were able to repair this spindle in less than two days for our customer because we have our on site grinding department with two Kellenburger ID/OD grinders. We do not grind spindles in assembly like a lot of our competition. That is a sure sign of poor workmanship being hidden by poor repair practices.
