    Niigata Spindle Repair

    40 taper

    12,000 rpm

The front bearings on this spindle lost preload causing the spacer to spin. This galled the shaft. The front taper had been ground plate ground in the past and the chrome was chipped.

We ground plate ground the taper removing the old chrome and replacing it with new. We ground plate ground the front spacer and shaft to repair the damage. Once the dimensional work was completed in our grinding department the spindle was rebuilt in our clean room. It then was broken in and test run at 12,000 rpm.

     HSD Spindle Repair

    12,000 rpm

This spindle is manufactured for working with stone. One of our independant service providers sent it to us as the OEM lead times and cost were quite high. As you can imagine the swarf produced from working with stone is very abrasive and special care needs to be taken while rebuilding this type of spindle to make sure the contamination prevention systems of the spindle are in proper working order. Special tools are also needed to disassemble the spindle. These were manufactured in our machining department and are kept in our stock room for future repairs.

We were able to complete the repair for far less money than the OEM. We will be monitoring the progress of these spindles to see if there are design modifications we can make to improve the spindle life for our customers.

Beware of the spindle rebuilder that is not qualified!!!!!!!!
This customer sent his spindle to be repaired to a repair house who frankly did not know what they were doing. This is a list of the damage they did to the spindle in their attempt to repair it:
Front bearings were installed wrong (backwards), rear roller not loaded, hydraulic nuts are made wrong and not functioning properly, shaft taper has 50 microns run out, front journal has 37 microns out, front and rear shoulder have 15 microns run out, tail of shaft has run out. Rear housing is over sized.  dremmel cut in the hydraulic nut area of the shaft, rear bearing was spinning in the housing.
This made our job much more difficult but we were able to salvage the spindle and it currently runs as good as new!!!

We kiss ground the taper, replaced the drawbar and rebuilt the spindle.

    DECKEL MAHO GILDEMEISTER Franz Kessler

Franz Kessler out of DMG CNC Machine
Franz Kessler out of DMG CNC Machine

This Franz Kessler spindle was removed from a DMG (DECKEL MAHO GILDEMEISTER) machine by our customer who is a cnc retrofitter. The spindle had been crashed and had severe taper damage and a broken drive dog. The bearings had also been brinelled. We were able to replace the integrated drive dog and grind plate grind the taper. We then assembled the spindle with new ceramic bearings, balanced and test ran the spindle at full speed. After we checked the drawbar sensors and the rotary encoder to make sure they were functioning properly we  shipped the spindle. The cost of our repair was less than 40% of the replacement spindle offered by DMG.
