Sometimes I think the drawbar is the red headed step child of the machine tool it is in. It very seldom gets checked to see how it is performing. Sometimes people get the spindle repaired or replaced and do not rebuild the drawbar at the same time. Lets face, if the spindle ran for fifteen years, well the drawbar has done many tool changes in that 15 years and should be refreshed. Drawbar force should be checked on a yearly schedule. Low drawbar force can damage tooling, the spindle taper, cause chatter on the part, pull stud breakage, shortened tool life and odd health hazards if the tool flies out of the machine at 7000 rpm…I am surprised still, that many Machine OEM’s sell customers new spindles for $10,000.00 plus dollars and do not send a new drawbar with it. To me that’s like buying a new car, and having to put the wheels from your old car on your new car?? Oh I’m, sorry they do sell the drawbar as an option if you want one,, and you realized this after you took delivery of your new spindle, causing another day of downtime, and you going back to the powers that be, saying you need another $1500 bucks for the drawbar. It just doesn’t make sense! Save yourself, or your company the money and the aggravation, and give us a call. 1-800-SPINDLE. When a customer sends NTE a spindle we will always ask for the drawbar assembly. We will check the incoming drawbar force, gripper/collet condition, and replace the bellville washers. That way you have a completely rebuilt spindle, that will perform for many years to come. Let us worry about the redheaded step child..And you worry about making pretty parts.
Our experience in spindle repair has taught us an important lesson, if it’s made with precision in mind and it rotates our customers need a place to have it fixed. It all started about 15 years ago when a good customer of ours sent in live tooling to be repaired. When we disassembled it to evaluated it’s cause of failure we noticed it shared many of the properties of a precision spindle. We also have a distinct advantage at NTE given that we are equipped to do all of the grinding and machining needed in our facility.

Northland Tool & Electronics was started in 1979 to serve the printed circuit market. In our first days we specialized in high speed drilling and routing spindles for circuit board manufacturing. These spindles were 1 hp, had ball bearings and had a top speed of 80,000 rpm’s. Years later the industry incorporated air bearing technology into the drilling spindles providing a top speed of 110,000 rpm.
As our business grew we found ID grinding spindles had very much the same characteristics as the drilling spindles. ID grinding spindles need to achieve high rpm’s to maximize stock removal, and achieve sufficient surface finishes. ID grinding spindles regularly run between 15,000 to 150,000 rpm. At these speeds your spindle needs to be rebuilt to exacting tolerances and your repair company needs a multitude of specialty measuring equipment and tools to rebuild them properly. Some spindle housing and shaft tolerances need to be measured to within .00005 of an inch. It is important to have the capability and equipment to balance to the .05-gram scale.
