    Mori Seiki SV500 Spindle Repair

This Mori Seiki spindle was sent to us from a company in Italy to repair. Their sister plant here in the United States has been a customer of ours for spindle rebuild over 20 years.

The spindle was completely disassembled when we received it. At times this makes it difficult to determine the cause of failure but we are able to determine which parts will need to be reworked or replaced in our initial spindle evaluation. Our evaluation showed that the front spindle bearings failed first and were stressed to the point that the inner races split. The drawbar assembly gripper fingers and Belleville washers were worn beyond tolerance. The shaft drive dogs and front cover were damaged from impact. The rear housing was tapered and worn oversize by 25 microns.

We replaced the gripper fingers and Belleville washers to recondition the drawbar assembly. Our machining department repaired the damaged drive dogs. The rear housing and shaft taper where sent to our grinding department where they were green ground, chrome plated then finish ground on one of our Kellenburger ID/OD universal grinders.

Once the reconditioned parts passed our QC process the spindle was released to our clean room for assembly. The shaft was balanced on our schenk balancer and the bearings were installed. Then shaft was gently slid into the housing and the capture was set. After the rest of the spindle was assembled the spindle was placed on our custom test stand for break in and final trim balance. When this was completed the spindle repair was thoroughly tested by our QC personnel to insure micron tolerances are held and the vibration levels were within our standards. This spindle came in with the coupling for the drive motor attached to the rear of the shaft. Our incoming evaluation found the mating surfaces of these two parts was fretted and out of specification. This was causing vibration in the spindle resulting in poor part finish. This is one of the reasons we request you send as many of the rotating parts of the spindle that is reasonable. If we had not received the coupling and addressed the wear, the lifespan of the repair would have been reduced from the strain of the vibration and wear.

We ground plate ground the spindle shaft and the spindle drive coupling as a matched set. We replaced the bearings, adjusted preload, balanced, assembled and broke in the spindle before sending it through our vigorous QC process. View Our Mori Seiki Spindle Repair Page Here.

The initial concern for this customer was the sound of the bearings during rotation. Upon further inspection the temperature of the spindle had elevated. This was caused by contamination in the bearings, both front and rear.

Our evaluation showed run out in the taper and face on the front of the shaft. We kiss ground the tooling interface in our grinding department. The spindle repair was then moved to our clean room were it received a complete rebuild and replacement of all wear items including bearings. We adjusted the preload, balanced, assembled and sent the spindle through our final QC inspection. Once all this was done the spindle was returned to the customer. We repair several spindles from our customers in Canada. This spindle came to us in very rough shape. The spindle had a damaged shaft taper, broken drive dogs, coolant plungers were worn and the shaft journals were undersized.  We were able to repair the drive dogs in our machining department and fix the shaft dimensional issues by grind, chrome plate and finish grinding the shaft taper and bearing journals. This process can be done for a fraction of the cost that the OEM would charge to replace the shaft. In some cases we can improve the shaft design and make it more robust than the original. Our experienced technicians then assembled the spindle in our clean room and test run, balanced and performed our rigorous final quality checks. The spindle was shipped back to the customer.

Some of the fears we hear from prospective customers in Canada is the border crossing. Please call us if you have any questions and we can provide a solution. Our expert-shipping department handles all of the commercial invoices and sets up important documents with the customs brokerage. We experience very few border delays. View Our Mori Seiki Spindle Repair Page Here.

    Magnetic Rotor

This spindle was crashed causing bearing failure and alignment pin damage. What makes this repair unique is the magnetic rotor. Special care must be taken throughout the repair process to make sure the rotor is not damaged or picks up contaminates. Our technicians are required to remove all necklaces before working on this type of spindle as it may cause a choking hazard.

Our customer is in the automotive industry and needed us to complete this repair as quickly as possible to get their line back in service. We were able to fulfill their request and the machine is operating flawlessly as we speak. View Our Mori Seiki Spindle Repair Page Here.

The taper of this spindle had build up causing tool run out. The front bearings were contaminated and the front housing was over sized. All these factors contributed to bad part finish that eventually lead to our customer to send the spindle to Northland Tool for repair.

We ground plate ground the front housing and the 40 taper in our grinding department. The spindle was then assemble in our clean room. The final quality test showed less than 2 microns repeatable run out on a 12 inch test bar over multiple tool changes. This was exactly what our customer needed for his process. This customer was referred to us by another of our customers. This spindle had been repaired several years ago and during that repair the taper was kiss ground. Unfortunately that made the BIG PLUS taper unusable. We were able to repair the taper to BIG PLUS standards an rebuild the spindle. View Our Mori Seiki Spindle Repair Page Here.

    BIG PLUS Taper
    12,000 rpm
This spindle was crashed causing damage to the front bearings and the BIG PLUS taper. We needed to grind plate grind the taper to bring it back to manufacturers specifications.
Our final QC showed we had less than 2 microns run out on a 13 inch BIG PLUS test bar that repeated over 20 tool changes. The only way to achieve this type of accuracy is to have all the required BIG PLUS test tooling and a close working relationship with BIG PLUS.
Our competition claims to be able to repair BIG PLUS spindles. However, recently we have found several spindles we have had to rebuild after our competition has worked on them because they really have no understanding of the tooling interface and they are not equipped to test the tooling interface. If you need your BIG PLUS spindle repaired always ask the rebuilder if they are certified and for proof they posses the proper test tooling. You will save yourself a lot of aggravation. The owner of this spindle came to us after they had tried to repair this spindle themselves. It has a hydraulic nut to capture the front bearings and they found they were not equipped deal with the nut. When they installed the spindle into the machine the nut would loosen and give them end play.
We qualified their shaft, trued and adjusted the spacers and rebuilt the spindle using the bearings they had already purchased. We also gave them instructions to set the capture during installation.
They have installed the spindle themselves and are very happy that Northland Tool was willing to help them out of a tough situation and charge a reasonable fee. View Our Mori Seiki Spindle Repair Page Here.
