Jagura Spindle Repair
50,000 RPM
This customer sent in a Jagura spindle for repair as it was no longer providing them with the part finish they desired. Our evaluation found the front bearings were contaminated causing bearing failure. The tooling taper had 10 microns of run out and the pulley taper had 4 microns of run out. All these are factors contributed to the poor part finish.
We were able to kiss grind the shaft for the spindle repair on one of our Kellenburger grinders. The parts were cleaned and the spindle was assembled in our clean room. We test ran the spindle at the increased speed rating and trim balanced it. All run outs were checked and a final vibration analysis performed.
As an upgrade we recommended replacing the stock steel bearings with ceramic bearings. This allowed them to increase the spindle speed and increase the lifespan of the spindle.
Heald Redhead 413
Heald Redhead 413 Spindle Repair
A bearing manufacturer sent us a Heald Red Head belt driven 413 A-Frame style spindle. The customer wanted to increase the maximum speed capability of the Heald to decrease their machine downtime from changing out the ID spindle heads. They also wanted to increase they rigidity of the spindles used at 18,000 rpm. The existing bearing arraignment of the in the spindle had a maximum speed of 17,000. Our customer wanted to run his spindle at between 8,200 and 18,000 rpm. We replaced the steel bearings with ceramic bearings and implemented design improvements. We were able to increase the maximum speed to 21,000 rpm.
This is possible by insuring all the integral spindle precision parts were measured and gauged making sure they were at proper tolerances. This is critical when increasing the speed of a spindle. The spindle was then tested at the higher rpm, vibration analysis was performed and the top speed was calculated with the data accumulated. The customer received the Heald spindle and has stated the finish and accuracy it provides is far better than before the modification. They have increased productivity with the spindle and have requested ceramic bearings in any future Heald spindle rebuilds done by Northland Tool & Electronics. Ingersol T1500 Spindle Repair
This spindle, from the automotive industry, came to us from a long time customer of ours through integrated supply. The 50 taper was worn and the gearbox was leaking oil into the front bearings causing them to fail. Our evaluation found the graphite seal between the transmission and the main spindle was damaged. We had to custom make a replacement seal as the OEM does not stock the replacement part nor could they obtain one.
This spindle was ground on one of our Kellenburger grinders and all the replacement parts were manufactured in our specialized machining department. The spindle was assembled in our clean room and test run. The test stand for this spindle was specially made by Northland Tool. It is complete with vacuum system, oil pump and a specialized drive system. This allows us to duplicate the machines support systems letting us run the spindle as close to “real life” as possible. It has taken over 30 years for Northland Tool to acquire the knowledge and equipment to complete these types of repairs. Use caution when choosing your spindle repair company as many will portray they are equipped when in fact they are not.
Smith Renaud BA-0025 Spindle Repair
Northland Tool & Electronics has been rebuilding these Smith Renaud spindles for our customer for over 15 years. When we first started our repair program with them we would get 2 to 4 spindles to repair per month. We worked closely with them to eliminate main causes of failure. As you can see in the picture we added an air purge system to the front and rear of the spindle along with making changes to the labrynth systems. We also reconditioned the shaft and housing journal fits to bring them back to OEM specifications.
15 years later we receive 1 spindle every 2 to 3 years from them to repair. We have earned a customer for life and they have saved countless dollars in spindle repair and increased output due to less machine downtime and better part quality.
Pope P39CC Spindle Rebuild
Surface Grinding Spindle
This spindle was manufactured by the Pope corporation with a unique style roller bearing in the front of the spindle. The bearing is no longer manufactured as a production run part. Post production modified bearings are available but the quality is not always as it needs to be for a spindle application. To complete this repair we modified the shaft and housing to accept standard angular contact bearings. This makes the spindle replacement parts off the shelf items reducing the cost of the next repair and insures that the quality of the bearings are spindle grade. These modifications can be performed in our in house machining department and our in house grinding department.

Setco Spindle
Setco Spindle
We repair all types of Setco spindles. This spindle was being used in an application where the machine would run for 2 months then have no production for 4 months. The spindles were getting contaminated with liquid coolant and when they would start the machines back up after the shut down the spindles would not function properly. We implemented a better seal design and relayed some helpful tips to the customer to help prevent the continuous failures.
