    Fischer HJN-828 Spindle Repair

    28,000 RPM

This is a good example of a straight spindle repair. We received this spindle, broke it down, cleaned and the inspected the overall dimensions. We replaced the bearings, adjusted the preload, balanced, assembled and broke in the spindle. We then checked the spindle during the final QC inspection. Once all this was complete we shipped the Fischer HJN-828 spindle back to the customer.

After this GMN TSEV-100SDU was repaired, Travis took on the job of cleaning the spindle inside and out, and was then responsible for painting the spindle.

Small or New spindle repair companies

We have noticed an increase in calls from machine tool users because they sent their spindles to a “cheaper” or “faster” repair company. They are now sending the spindle to us for repair as the previous company was unable to satisfy the repair requirements of the customer. Many of these newer and/or smaller repair companies have been started by spindle technicians that have left larger spindle repair companies. They may have the experience to rebuild spindles but rarely do they have knowledge or experience running a business.

This is why Northland Tool is receiving more and more calls to help people that are now in a bad position. Some of the problems reported are warranties being voided without cause, the quality of the repair was poor and the spindle does not produce usable parts and little to no support with the repair. Frankly start up spindle companies find it difficult to afford the cost of repairing a spindle under warranty so they simply don’t. Chances are the spindle is a warranty because they did not invest in the proper equipment needed to insure the repairs were done properly.

It takes a lot of specialty equipment to repair a spindle. Fortunately we have had over 30 years to invest in our company and a large part of our business plan is to continue investing to insure we stay current with spindle technology. We also support our customers. Call us during normal working hours and you will be able to speak directly with people who have many years of experiance with spindle repair.

This Franz Kessler spindle was removed from a DMG (DECKEL MAHO GILDEMEISTER) machine by our customer who is a cnc retrofitter. The spindle had been crashed and had severe taper damage and a broken drive dog. The bearings had also been brinelled. We were able to replace the integrated drive dog and grind plate grind the taper. We then assembled the spindle with new ceramic bearings, balanced and test ran the spindle at full speed. After we checked the drawbar sensors and the rotary encoder to make sure they were functioning properly we  shipped the spindle. The cost of our repair was less than 40% of the replacement spindle offered by DMG.

    Okuma MX50 HA Spindle Repair

One of our customers was experiencing chatter on the parts manufactured in their Okuma MX50 HA. They could not afford downtime but the parts were becoming unacceptable. They pulled the spindle on Thursday afternoon and we received it late in the day. We evaluated the cause of failure and what work needed to be done to fully repair the spindle. We dedicated a technician to the repair and we were able to have the spindle repair completed by early Friday afternoon. The Okuma technician was able to install the spindle Friday before the end of the workday.

The repair was done in less than 24 hours and the machine was making parts in a little over 24 hours.

    On Site Taper Grind

NTE can provide our customers with on site taper grinds. This is an option that we offer customers who can not afford downtime. It is a quick fix to an untimely situation. We can grind tapers in horizontal and vertical machines. Taper grinds usually take 4 – 8 hours depending on the damage and size of the taper.  When the customer has scheduled down time it is recommended that they send the spindle in for a full rebuild.

Please note : A minimum of 21 inches between the taper and table is required for grinding purposes. In house taper grinds are not recommended for Big Plus and HSK tapers.

    Holiday shutdown maintenance

The holidays are here! Some of my customers are contacting me for quick repairs to their spindles over the holidays as they are to busy to shut the machine down during regular work weeks. We are working with them to schedule dedicated spindle repair technician times that are linked to their removal and installation schedule. By predetermining where our resources will be used I can give the accurate delivery schedules to my customers need to schedule the installation of the repaired spindles. I also know I will be able to live up to the delivery promises I made.
