After cleaning and inspecting this spindle we determined the cause of failure was contaminated bearings as well as run out on the shaft pilot face. We replaced the bearings, kiss ground the pilot face and machined the wheel hub on the shaft to true it. We also adjusted the preload, balanced, assembled and broke in the spindle. Once finished with our repair process this spindle was given our thorough quality control inspection and shipped back to the customer.

This grinding spindle came to us with the power leads cut off the stator. The incoming inspection showed contamination in both the front and rear bearings. When the customer cut the wires they were no longer able to connect the spindle as it is wound for high or low voltage. We were able to trace the leads and label them for easier installation. We assembled the spindle in our clean room with ABEC 7 bearings. After the completion of the assembly our technicians test ran the spindle at the top rated speed and trim balanced it. It was then put through our comprehensive final quality check and was approved for shipment.

Weighing in at over 1,000 pounds this Speedfam spindle needs special fixturing to be rebuilt. To hold the run out specifications given to us from the OEM we needed to manufacture special equipment to true the disk that holds the grinding stones. We have been using this equipment successfully for over 10 years and it is exclusive to the Speedfam spindles.
To work on this size spindle it takes a great amount of skill, experience and equipment. Northland Tool & Electronics has acquired these resources over our 30 years in the spindle repair business.
