    GMN TSEV-100SDU Spindle Repair

    5,000 RPM

There were a few things that needed repair on this spindle. The grease was washed out of the front bearings. The grippers were missing so we replaced those. A housing rod had bent threads and needed to be replaced. The HSK taper had 20 microns runout which we corrected with a grind chrome plate and regrind bringing it back to specs. The front nuts also needed to be repaired. This was all done, inspected by our quality control department and returned to the customer.

    Pibo Multi TRH400-333

    3,500 RPM

Our customer has an extensive installation of Pibo Multi spindles. A common cause of failure for this type of spindle is coolant contamination. To protect the spindle from this we evaluate the condition of the labyrinth system on the front end of the shaft systems. The spindle repairs often require a rework or replacement of these parts in order to maximize the contamination prevention properties of this system. Northland Tool & Electronics stocks these parts for many models and we can manufacture them for any repair.

    Jung Surface Grinder

After breaking down this spindle to clean and inspect the overall dimensions we determined that the cause of failure was contaminated front and rear bearings. The front housing was egged with 7 microns of runout and was tapered.

We repaired this Jung surface grinder by replacing the bearings. We ground plated and reground the front housing in addition to our standard repair process.

    Supermax 7 Spindle Repair

We received a call from a long time customer of ours regarding the repair of this spindle. They are in the aerospace industry and due to demand on the machine they needed to get the machine up and running as soon as possible. They checked with the machine tool OEM first but a new spindle was 6 weeks away at best. We discussed the various options they had for the spindle repair and to expedite the repair they drove the spindle to us that day.

We were able to evaluate the spindle within 24 hours. A repair plan was discussed with the customer. We gave them all the available options and the resulting delivery dates. As soon as we found the best route for them we proceeded with the spindle repair.

The 50 taper had run out and wear so it was determined that a grind plate grind was needed. The drawbar also showed wear and the gripper fingers were worn. When the bearings failed it allowed the shaft to drop and the drive gear rubbed out on the rear cover.

When the shaft was finished in our grinding department and the machining work was completed the spindle went to the clean room for assembly. All the wear items were replaced and the spindle was rebuilt. It then went to our test room where it was placed on our custom test fixture to be run to full speed. We then trim balanced the spindle repair and ran it through our final QC tests.

We were able to ship the spindle to our customer in a third of the time it would have taken to get a spindle from the OEM and we did it for at least half the price.

    Kia KV40A Spindle Repair

    6,000 RPM

This customer called us because his spindle was making too much noise even at low speeds. They were only running it at 1,000 RPM. The drawbar had already been replaced. We picked the spindle up at the customer’s location and brought it back to our facility where we thoroughly cleaned and inspected the spindle. We determined that there was front bearing failure from the bearings reaching the end of their expected life. The taper needed a kiss grind and the gripper fingers were worn.

We kiss ground the taper in our grinding department. We then adjusted the preload, replaced the bearings, balanced, assembled and broke in the spindle. The final step was our thorough QC check before we delivered the spindle back to the customer.

    Heald 405 Spindle Repair

    35,000 RPM

This spindle came with front bearing failure from contamination. The pilot had 22 microns runout and was oversized by 13-23 microns. Rear pulley taper had 60 microns runout. Front and rear journals are tapered and undersized by 3-4 microns. We ground plate ground the shaft pilot, front and rear journals. We also kissed ground the rear taper and the damage before the taper. Before the spindle was shipped back to the customer we adjusted preload,  balanced, assembled and broke it in. Mori Seiki CL203B

    3500 RPM

The initial concern for this customer was the sound of the bearings during rotation. Upon further inspection the temperature of the spindle had elevated. This was caused by contamination in the bearings, both front and rear.

Our evaluation showed run out in the taper and face on the front of the shaft. We kiss ground the tooling interface in our grinding department. The spindle repair was then moved to our clean room were it received a complete rebuild and replacement of all wear items including bearings. We adjusted the preload, balanced, assembled and sent the spindle through our final QC inspection. Once all this was done the spindle was returned to the customer. Whitnon Speedfam

    Whitnon Speedfam Spindle Repair

Weighing in at over 1,000 pounds this Speedfam spindle needs special fixturing to be rebuilt. To hold the run out specifications given to us from the OEM we needed to manufacture special equipment to true the disk that holds the grinding stones. We have been using this equipment successfully for over 10 years and it is exclusive to the Speedfam spindles.

To work on this size spindle it takes a great amount of skill, experience and equipment. Northland Tool & Electronics has acquired these resources over our 30 years in the spindle repair business.

    Grinding spindle
This spindle needed fresh bearings and kiss grinds to both tapers to bring it back to optimum performance levels. We were able to repair this spindle in less than two days for our customer because we have our on site grinding department with two Kellenburger ID/OD grinders. We do not grind spindles in assembly like a lot of our competition. That is a sure sign of poor workmanship being hidden by poor repair practices.

    Johnford Spindles

    Johnford Spindle

    7,500 rpm
    40 taper
This spindle failed from coolant contamination that deteriorated the bearing grease. This is a common mode of failure for Johnford spindles especially those that have the through tool coolant option. Northland Tool has developed a package that will decrease the failure rate! We have incorporated it on several machines with continued success. If you are experiencing high rates of spindle failure call us to discuss your repair options.
