    Parker Majestic 73A-4 Spindle Repair

    6,000 RPM

This Parker Majestic spindle repair is a perfect example of our standard repair.

After receiving the spindle we cleaned and inspected the overall dimensions to determine the cause of failure. We replaced the bearings. We then adjusted the preload, balanced, assembled, broke in and QC tested the spindle.

The spindle then shipped back to the customer with our standard 1 year warranty.

    Fischer HJN-828 Spindle Repair

    28,000 RPM

This is a good example of a straight spindle repair. We received this spindle, broke it down, cleaned and the inspected the overall dimensions. We replaced the bearings, adjusted the preload, balanced, assembled and broke in the spindle. We then checked the spindle during the final QC inspection. Once all this was complete we shipped the Fischer HJN-828 spindle back to the customer.

    Hurco HS100842 Spindle Repair

We repair many spindles from customers in Canada. This customer sent us a Hurco HS100842 spindle for repair.

After breaking down the spindle for evaluation we discovered that the #1 front bearing had failed. The shaft taper had 4 microns runout and the front shoulder had 3-4 microns runout.

We repaired this Hurco HS100842 spindle and shipped back to our customer using their UPS number. Many customers request that we ship back on their freight account. We are happy to oblige.

    Takisawa MCV-V1E

This customer has over 700 machine tools operating in their facility. We have done several spindle repairs for their sister plant and this plant was not happy with their current spindle rebuilder.

The spindle arrived at our facility and we started our evaluation. Upon disassembly of the spindle we found the bearing housing was out of round. This caused stress to the rolling elements as they did not have the proper clearance to function properly. The rear shaft nut had been gauled during the last repair by the other rebuilder and needed to be machined off.

The housing was ground plate ground in our grinding department and a new rear nut was manufactured. It is common for us to remanufacture spindle parts as the majority of them are custom to the spindle and can not be purchased.

Once the parts were completed the spindle repair moved to our clean room for assembly by an experienced technician. The spindle was put together using tools designed by Northland Tool & Electronics to ensure the proper assembly practices are followed. The spindle was then test run on our custom test stand duplicating the running speeds it will see in operation.

    MV40

    12,000 rpm

We repair several spindles from our customers in Canada. This spindle came to us in very rough shape. The spindle had a damaged shaft taper, broken drive dogs, coolant plungers were worn and the shaft journals were undersized.  We were able to repair the drive dogs in our machining department and fix the shaft dimensional issues by grind, chrome plate and finish grinding the shaft taper and bearing journals. This process can be done for a fraction of the cost that the OEM would charge to replace the shaft. In some cases we can improve the shaft design and make it more robust than the original. Our experienced technicians then assembled the spindle in our clean room and test run, balanced and performed our rigorous final quality checks. The spindle was shipped back to the customer.

Some of the fears we hear from prospective customers in Canada is the border crossing. Please call us if you have any questions and we can provide a solution. Our expert-shipping department handles all of the commercial invoices and sets up important documents with the customs brokerage. We experience very few border delays. View Our Mori Seiki Spindle Repair Page Here.

    Heald Redhead 413

    Heald Redhead 413 Spindle Repair

A bearing manufacturer sent us a Heald Red Head belt driven 413 A-Frame style spindle. The customer wanted to increase the maximum speed capability of the Heald to decrease their machine downtime from changing out the ID spindle heads. They also wanted to increase they rigidity of the spindles used at 18,000 rpm. The existing bearing arraignment of the in the spindle had a maximum speed of 17,000. Our customer wanted to run his spindle at between 8,200 and 18,000 rpm. We replaced the steel bearings with ceramic bearings and implemented design improvements. We were able to increase the maximum speed to 21,000 rpm.

This is possible by insuring all the integral spindle precision parts were measured and gauged making sure they were at proper tolerances. This is critical when increasing the speed of a spindle. The spindle was then tested at the higher rpm, vibration analysis was performed and the top speed was calculated with the data accumulated. The customer received the Heald spindle and has stated the finish and accuracy it provides is far better than before the modification. They have increased productivity with the spindle and have requested ceramic bearings in any future Heald spindle rebuilds done by Northland Tool & Electronics.  View Our Heald Spindle Repair Page Here.

    12,000 rpm
    40 taper
    Oil Mist Lubrication
This customer has multiple Mazak VTC200B machines in their facility that were experiencing frequent spindle failures. We disassembled the first spindle and found that the design was very poor. The nut for the rear bearings was hydraulic and had the long shaft that attaches to the drive motor bolted to it. The problem with this setup occurs if there is any misalignment with the drive motor, any vibration in the drive motor or if any number of ground surfaces are not virtually perfect. Any flaws in these areas subjects stress directly to the rear bearing causing premature failure. To compound these issues the drawbar system that requires significant forces to function is included in this assembly.
We discussed these findings with our customer and mutually decided the best course of action was to replace the shaft, hydraulic nut and drive motor tube. This was the only way to insure proper fits and run outs. Special care will also need to be taken during the installation process to insure proper alignment and balance.

    Anca SYS32

    Tool & Cutter grinding spindle
The grease was completly washed from the bearings by part coolant causing the bearings to fail.
We remanufactured the front labyrinth and replaced the open bearings with a sealed bearing design. By incorporating these contamination prevention design upgrades their spindles have been lasting at least 3 to 4 times longer than before the upgrade. Their spindle life is now measured in years instead of months.

    Pope P32 surface grinding spindle

This is a standard surface grinding spindle made by the Pope corp. We have fixed hundreds of spindles like this one and can hold micron tolerances if needed for die work and other high tolerance manufacturing. We also can incorporate updated seal designs for additional contamination protection.

    Johnford Spindles
    Johnford Spindles

    Johnford Spindle

    7,500 rpm
    40 taper
This spindle failed from coolant contamination that deteriorated the bearing grease. This is a common mode of failure for Johnford spindles especially those that have the through tool coolant option. Northland Tool has developed a package that will decrease the failure rate! We have incorporated it on several machines with continued success. If you are experiencing high rates of spindle failure call us to discuss your repair options.
