GMN TSEV-100SDU Spindle Repair
There were a few things that needed repair on this spindle. The grease was washed out of the front bearings. The grippers were missing so we replaced those. A housing rod had bent threads and needed to be replaced. The HSK taper had 20 microns runout which we corrected with a grind chrome plate and regrind bringing it back to specs. The front nuts also needed to be repaired. This was all done, inspected by our quality control department and returned to the customer.

Front bearing failure causing the inner race of the bearing to spin on the shaft.
Northland Tool ground plate ground the front bearing journal to OEM specifications. We then rebuilt the spindle in our clean room and test ran it at speed. The spindle was trim balanced at 60,00 rpm and run on our test stand duplicating the machines set up as much as possible.

HSK style OD tapers

This spindle had worn bearings and 3 to 4 microns
of run out on the tapers. We are able to fix these spindles because we have our in house grinding department. The tooling interfaces need to meet micron tolerances to function properly. We have developed a process and the equipment needed to meet these tolerances.

Our customer has instituted a predictive maintenance program for their spindles at this facility. This spindles vibration characteristics exceeded the preset threshold during the last vibration testing route. Our customer pulled it from production and sent it to us for repair.
Because the spindle was removed from service before it suffered catastrophic bearing failure it only needed a “straight” repair. The cost savings from the repairs alone will give our customer a return on their predictive maintenance investment in less than one year!

Campbell Grinder Spindle
This GMN spindle is used in a Campbell Grinder. Our incoming evaluation showed the bearings were contaminated with part coolant. We reviewed the different techniques we could used to help prevent contamination with our customer and decided on what would work best in their application. Years later this spindle is still running in the machine with no indication that contamination has entered the spindle.
