A Note from the President

I have been reflecting that fifty years ago this month I started in the machine tool industry. My start was in the apprenticeship school at the Cincinnati Milling Machine Company (later renamed to Cincinnati Milacron) as a co-op student from Georgia Tech. I finished the apprenticeship program four years later, received my degree from Tech the following year, and then went on to the Graduate School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Now, how is this longevity relevant to any relationship that you may have with Northland Tool? First, our customers often asked what types of spindles we rebuild. We find this a difficult question to directly answer due to the fact that I cannot recall any that we have not either rebuilt or are able to rebuild. It may also be a fact that it has probably been twenty years since we have last seen a spindle from a Sundstrand Omnimil or a five axis Milwaukee-Matic Model III. But, if you have one, we can research our records and help you out.

This brings up another relevant issue. Since Northland has been in business for twenty-seven years - much longer that most others in our industry - we have a large and comprehensive library of prints, schematics, notes, drawings, and other information on spindles that we can make reference to in the rebuilding process. We are better able to be of service to you due to this experience and information.

The most relevant issue to me regarding the past fifty years is that I have learned that integrity and honesty in relationships with customers, suppliers, employees, and the community at large is of the utmost importance. If given the opportunity, we try our best to keep these attributes uppermost in mind as we provide a service and develop a working association with you.

What’s New at Northland Tool

October 1, 2007....In order to do a comprehensive rebuilding of a spindle, tolerances that meet ISO specifications must be achieved for bearing fits on shaft OD’s, housing ID’s and tooling interfaces. Achieving these tolerances will ensure that your spindle will meet and often will exceed the specification of a new spindle.

Northland Tool is one of the few rebuilders with tight tolerance grinding capabilities as part of our facility. Namely, it has employed a Kellenberger 1000U precision, universal, ID/OD grinder for this purpose. This grinder represents the state of the art in precision grinding and is used in lieu of relying upon outside services for these critical functions.

Having this in-house grinding capacity has proven so beneficial to our customers that Northland has recently acquired a second Kellenberger grinder that is identical to its first. The additional capacity represented by this second machine is resulting in more expeditious turnaround times for the rebuilding of your spindle. It is another positive action and commitment by Northland to providing the best possible quality and service to our customers.

While others may have no precision grinding capabilities, Northland now has two world-class machines to better provide service to you.
