The Acer AGS-1224AHD is an older automatic surface grinder used for various different applications. It comes fitted with this grease lubricated and coupling driven spindle capable of running up to 1,750 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Acer AGS-1224AHD spindle had bearings that were very noisy when rotated by hand in assembly incoming. Before disassembling the spindle we noted that the front (wheel) end of spindle was heavily corroded. The front shaft nut was stuck from said corrosion and had to be machined off. After fully disassembling and evaluating the spindle, we found that the grease in all the bearings was degraded and contaminated with a rusty particulate. We then measured critical surfaces of the spindle and found that the wheel hub OD taper had excessive runout >10µm. No other significant dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Acer AGS-1224AHD spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace all bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
- Kiss grind the wheel hub OD taper
- Manufacture and install a new front shaft nut
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
