Acer VMC 2040 Spindle Rebuild
This spindle was sent to us in need of a quick repair. Our evaluation showed it needed dimensional work done to the shaft. We were able to grind plate grind the damaged areas in our grinding department and beat the customers delivery expectations by shipping it a week early.
Possible cause of failure:
Spindle shaft and bearings were removed from the housing incoming.
#4 bearing cage was broken and inner race was heat welded to shaft, #3 failed from debris when #4 failed.
The #5 tail bearing balls and cage were missing incoming, it appears it had catastrophic failure.
Drawbar force was low incoming, 1515lbs.
Gripper fingers are showing wear.
Shaft taper has 8-10 microns runout.
Drive dogs are very worn.
Rear housing has scoring.
Customer supplied a tool and knob
Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
Kiss grind 40 shaft taper.
Grind, chrome plate and finish grind the rear housing.
Replace bearings, bellevilles, o-rings, and wave springs.
Repair the drive dogs.
Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in. Final quality control inspection
