Acer VMC 2040 Spindle Repair

Acer VMC 2040 Spindle Repair

CHALLENGE

When this Acer VMC 2040 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics the shaft and bearings were removed from the housing incoming.  Upon disassembling the spindle we found that the #4 bearing cage was broken and inner race was heat welded to shaft.  The #3 bearing failed from debris when #4 failed. Lastly the #5 tail bearing balls and cage were missing incoming, it appears it had catastrophically failed.  We measured the drawbar force on the incoming spindle and it was low at 1515lbs.  The gripper fingers were showing significant wear and the drive dogs were very worn.  We measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, bearing shoulders, taper, etc.) and found that the shaft taper had 8-10 microns runout.  We also noted that the rear housing had scoring and would need to be addressed.
