Bridgeport VMC XT-1000 Hydraulic Nut Failure



CHALLENGE

Possible cause of failure: Bearing grease was beginning to discolor from coolant contamination. Rear hydraulic nut was previously cut off & reinstalled, shaft journal was damaged in the process of removal. Rear bearings failed most likely due to loss of preload when rear hydraulic nut was damaged. Three set screws used to lock the drawbar in the shaft were cut and loose in the drawbar. Gripper fingers are worn & incoming tool retention force was 680lbs Shaft tooling taper is worn

SOLUTION

Recommended action: Clean, inspect overall dimensions. Manufacture new rear hydraulic nut. Weld, grind, chrome plate & finish grind damaged shaft journal. Light kiss grind of tooling taper to improve contact & runout. Replace bearings, Bellevilles, grippers, drawbar balls, o-rings & assembly screws. Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in. Final quality control inspection.
