This Bryant 217-G-3-22638 spindle is belt driven, permanent grease lubricated, and capable of running up to 14,000 RPM.
CHALLENGE
This Bryant 217-G grinding spindle was sent to us by an MRO integrator on behalf of their customer, a large aerospace component manufacturer. The spindle was in relatively good condition overall, but the degradation of the bearing grease made it obvious that the spindle had been in service for many years. We did observe some runout in the tapered ID tooling pilot because of over-compression of the exterior wrench flats, as well as slightly higher runout on the drive pulley OD taper. The manufacturing end-user had apparently already installed the tooling & pulley on another spindle, and declined our recommendation to kiss grind these surfaces to minimize the runout.
SOLUTION
After thoroughly cleaning all components, we reassembled the spindle with all new bearings. We ran up the spindle for six hours to break in the permanent grease, while performing final trim balance & thermal & vibration checks.
RESULT
The spindle temperature never exceeded 76° F measured at the front bearing location, and 75° F in the rear. We won’t see this spindle again for many years.
