Churchill Wheel Head Spindle Repair
The Churchill Wheel Head spindle is grease lubricated and pulley driven making it capable of running up to 3,600 rpm.
This Churchill spindle was seized when it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics. The spindle nose was heavily corroded and rust was found in the interior of the spindle. This spindle was previously converted from oil bath lubrication to permanent greased bearings by another company. This conversion, if not done properly, can result in coolant contamination to the bearings. In this case the interior of the spindle was full of oil/coolant which caused bearing failure due to contamination of the grease. We noted that the front shaft nut spanner holes were damaged from the previous rebuild as well. We recommended the installation of a front air purge to reduce the possibility of future contamination.
The following actions were performed on this Churchill Wheel Head spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace bearings, bolts, and o-rings
- Install front air purge
- Plug holes in the top of the casting to mitigate contamination
- Rework the front shaft spanner holes
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
