The Cincinnati Hawk TC-150 is a 2-axis CNC turning center equipped with a spindle capable of 5,500 rpm.
CHALLENGE
When this Cincinnati Hawk TC-150 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics the interior of spindle was completely contaminated with coolant. The grease was washed out of #1 and #2 front bearings, with very little left in the #3 bearing. The #5 rear bearing also heavily contaminated & beginning to lock up. The front bearing capture was set with .070” of shims behind the front cover. After being fully disassembled the critical dimensions (Bearing journals, bearing shoulders, housing, etc.) were measured and two dimensional deviations were found. First the front housing 150mm ID is oversized +10/+15µ (ISO is +/-9µ). Second the rear housing 140mm ID has worn, dented, and is oversized/egged +25/+35µ (ISO is 0/+10µ).
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Cincinnati Hawk TC-150 spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace all bolts and o-rings
- Replace Inpro seal
- Replace bearings
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind front and rear housings.
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
