This Ewag spindle is grease lubricated and pulley driven making it capable of running up to 3,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
When this Ewag 035 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics the bearings felt very rough when rotated by hand. Upon disassembly, we found that the front and rear bearings failed from contamination. Coolant and swarf was found throughout the spindle and the grease in the bearings was almost completely washed out. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, pilot face, etc.) and found a few unacceptable deviations. First, the shaft tooling pilot 18mm OD was -9µ undersized with 6µ runout. Second the pilot face had 6-8µ runout. No other dimensional deviations were found.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Ewag 035 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
- Grind, chrome plate & finish grind tooling pilot OD
- Kiss grind pilot face
- Replace bearings, o-ring, 90° push connect fitting, and 3mm alignment pin
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
