The Fischer HJN-828 is a high speed grinding spindle. This specific spindle is oil mist lubricated, pulley driven, and capable of running up to 28,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Fischer HJN-828 spindle arrived to Northland Tool and Electronics completely seized. The spindle was then broken down and evaluated to determine the scope of work needed for the repair. Once the spindle was disassembled, we noted that the front and rear bearings had failed due to lack of the oil mist lubrication. The spindle interior was completely dry, with no oil present whatsoever. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, taper, housing, etc.) and found that the front housing ID was oversized, egged, and tapered +8/+14µ (ISO is ±6.5µ).
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Fischer HJN-828 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the front housing ID
- Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
