The GMN TSSV-120 is a high speed grinding spindle with its own built in motor. It is oil mist lubricated and capable of running up to 42,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
When this GMN TSSV120 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics we first noted that it had axial end play, indicating a loss of bearing preload. The shaft tooling pilot had very high runout (>36µ) and the pilot face was chipped. Our internal evaluation showed contamination with grinding swarf. Also, the rear ID of the main housing, where the ball cage locates, was egged and oversized with dings from the balls because the slide fit was too loose.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this GMN TSSV120 spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace all bolts and o-rings
- Replace ceramic bearings
- Grind-chrome plate-finish grind (GPG) the shaft tooling pilot
- GPG the rear housing ID
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

It’s a fact of machining — eventually, even top-of-the-line turning machines will experience a spindle failure. Spindles endure tension, torsion, heavy loads, and speeds up to and beyond 150,000 RPM, to name a few of the standard stressors.
