The Haas HL-6 is a high production CNC turning center. It can come fitted with this oil lubricated and belt driven spindle that is capable of running up to 1,800 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Haas HL-6 spindle was received as only a shaft and bearings. After we completed a full breakdown and evaluation of the spindle, we found that there had been a catastrophic front bearing failure. The ball cage was destroyed and the bearing separated during breakdown. The rear bearing was contaminated with a brown particulate, but was still intact. Lastly, we found that the nose of the spindle showed signs that the front cover was rubbing. We will have the customer check the front cover during installation. No dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Haas HL-6 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
- Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
