The Haas VF-9 is a very large CNC vertical machining center with a CAT 50 tooling taper. It can come equipped with an oil mist lubricated and belt driven spindle that is capable of running up to 10,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Haas VF-9 spindle was dificult to turn incoming, so no incoming run out tests could be performed. Upon disassembly and inspection, we noted that the inside of the front cover was caked with a black sludge material. The front bearings were severely contaminated with a brown particulate and the ID of the outer spacer had grease that had black particulate in it. Lastly, the front ID Taper had run out (8 microns) and will need a Grind, plate, grind. There were no other dimensional deviations noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Haas VF-9 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
- Replace bolts, o-rings, gripper balls, bearings, and bellevilles
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the ID 50 taper
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
