Hardinge GX600 Spindle Repair

Northland Tool & Electronics was referred to this spindle repair by the regional dealer for Hardinge. The machine had been run hard and the spindle showed the signs of it. Our customer was unable to keep tools from breaking during the cutting process. The taper was very worn and the drawbar retention force was dangerously low. Our customer found a 1 week time period that they could remove the spindle and have it repaired. We were able to complete the repair in the time allowed and they have been running with the same tooling for quite a while now. Their quality has dramatically improved and they are saving enormous amounts of money in tooling.

Possible cause of failure:

  • Taper is very worn and out of ISO
  • Grippers are worn, low drawbar force
  • Tool holder is very worn and should not be used

Repair action:

  • Clean, inspect overall dimensions
  • Replace bearings with steel big ball
  • Replace grippers and bellevilles
  • Grind chrome plate and regrind taper
  • Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in
  • Final quality control inspection
