Hardinge Spindle Repair

This spindle had seized in the machine. Our customer hired an outside service group to remove and install the spindle for them. You can see in the picture below that the number 1 bearing was the cause of the seizure. The bearing cage deteriorated to the point that it no longer separated the rolling elements from each other. When this happens the balls stack up and prevent smooth turning of the spindle shaft.

Possible cause of failure:

  • Front bearing failure
  • Taper is out of ISO

Repair action:

  • Clean, inspect overall dimensions
  • Replace bearings
  • Kiss grind taper
  • Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in
  • Final quality control inspection
