The Hardinge Conquest T42 is a twin spindle CNC turning center. This spindle is the secondary sub spindle that is grease lubricated, belt driven, and capable of running up to 6,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Hardinge Conquest T42 Sub spindle was in rough shape when it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics. After disassembly, we noted that the spindle interior contained rust-colored oily contaminant with some particulate. This contaminant washed out and degraded the grease in the spindle bearings causing excessive bearing wear. Lastly, the collet ID taper was worn and pock-marked. No other significant dimensional deviations were noted (bearing journals/shoulders, housing bores).
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Hardinge Conquest T42 Sub spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Kiss grind the collet ID taper
- Replace all bearings, front cap plastic gasket, plastic face plug, wear ring, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
