Economy was the route the customer wanted to take with this repair. They had tried to fix it themselves and realized that it would be better to send it out for service. We evaluated the spindle and found that the majority of the bearing surfaces were not to ISO specification. We discussed this in detail with our customer and we outlined the pro’s and con’s of not fixing the bearing surfaces. It was decided that the spindle could function well enough to accomplish the job without reworking the shaft and housing.
CHALLENGE
Possible cause of failure:
- Received disassembled
- Undersized journals
- Oversized housings
- Rear housing has severe scoring and chrome chipping
- Shaft nut is cracked
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Heald Red Head 411 spindle:

- Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
*For this repair the customer declined the grind, chrome plate, and finish grind to the journals and housings. They also declined the manufacturing of a new shaft nut.
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
