The Hermle NR 35.5759 is grease lubricated, coupling driven, and capable of running up to 10,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

When this Hermle NR 35.5759 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics it had a very high pitched whine when spun by hand as well as under power on the test stand.  Vibration analysis shows ultra-high frequency noise indicating a bearing element defect.  The spindle exterior was very rusty and coated with coolant, rear splash ring was rusted.  Upon disassembling the spindle we found that the housing interior and bearings were coated with coolant residue.  The rear drive spline condition was acceptable. No dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Hermle NR 35.5759 spindle:

  • Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
  • Replace the quad set of bearings, o-rings, and assembly screw

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
