The Jarvis LTR 0158 is a coupling-driven, grease-lubricated spindle with a right angle head that operates at up to 6,000 rpm. Continue reading to learn how we executed this Jarvis LTR 0158 spindle repair.
CHALLENGE
This spindle spun freely upon initial inspection but made some noise when turned by hand. The front bearings were contaminated with coolant, and grease throughout spindle interior had degraded. Our technician discovered that a sheared key on the geared drive shaft allowed other gears to spin. Measurement of critical dimensions revealed that the front shaft journal was worn and undersized by 2x ISO. The front and rear journals on idler stud #8 had rubout damage.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Jarvis LTR 0158 spindle:
- Replaced all bearings, keys, lock nut and washer
- Replaced all seals and assembly hardware
- GPG (grind, chrome plate, and finish grind) the geared drive shaft and idler stud
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
