The Komo VMC50/160 is a grease lubricated and belt driven milling spindle capable of running up to 4,500 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Komo VMC50/160 spindle was completely disassembled and evaluated when it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics. We found that the front bearings were contaminated, most of the grease was washed out. The rotary union/actuator bearings were bad as well, with the internal balls and tapered cams are pock marked. It was also noted that the bellevilles, Inpro seal, and Spieth nut were worn and would need to be replaced. Lastly, the taper was out of ISO specifications with -8µ runout. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Komo VMC50/160 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, o-rings, quad seal, bellevilles, inpro seal, spieth nut, and rotary union/actuator
- Kiss grind the taper to correct runout
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
