CHALLENGE
This LOH LZ80S ZS42X185 was seized when it arrived at our facility. Initial inspection revealed that the mounting stud threads had broken off. This is an optical grinding spindle, and the interior of the spindle had become contaminated with material swarf due to worn seals.
All of the bearings in this spindle were found to be in critical condition. The balls in the ball cage were worn and had created ball paths in the OD of the spindle shaft. Balls in the front and rear thrust bearings were significantly worn, as was the spacer for the ball cage.
SOLUTION
This LOH LZ80S ZS42X185 repair required that we fabricate new replacement parts. We manufactured a new mounting stud and a spacer for the ball cage. The spindle shaft received grind, chrome plate, and finish grind to the OD to bring back to spec. Finally, we replaced ball cage assembly, thrust bearing balls & seals.
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

It’s a fact of machining — eventually, even top-of-the-line turning machines will experience a spindle failure. Spindles endure tension, torsion, heavy loads, and speeds up to and beyond 150,000 RPM, to name a few of the standard stressors.
