CHALLENGE
When this Matsuura RG-3II spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics we performed a complete breakdown and evaluation. Upon inspection we noted a catastrophic failure of the rear roller bearing, the cage was disintegrated. It was discovered that the rear roller bearing was not rated to consistently run near 10k rpm. We also noted that the rear spieth nut had damage from repeated removal from a previous vendor’s repair. Lastly, the chrome in shaft tooling taper was flaking and the taper had uneven tool contact.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Matsuura RG-3II spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the tooling taper
- Upgrade to high-speed rear roller bearings and small ball ceramic pair in front to enable 12,000 RPM operation
- Replace Spieth nut, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
