The Mitsubishi M-H60D is a very large CNC horizontal machining center. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and gear driven spindle capable of running up to 6,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Mitsubishi M-H60D spindle was sent to Northland Tool and Electronics for a full breakdown and evaluation. Upon inspection we noted that the front bearings failed due to contamination and the rear bearings spun in the rear housing. We then assessed the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found a few issues. First, the rear housing was oversized and the rear shaft journal was undersized. Second, the taper had significant runout and the rear shaft labrynth was damaged and bent. Lastly, the customer sent the rear housing but no cover or labrynth and we were missing the bolts for the drive gear.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Mitsubishi M-H60D spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, o-rings, grippers, bellevilles, and reamer bolts
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the rear housing
- GPG the rear shaft journals
- Kiss grind the taper
- Manufacture a new rear shaft labrynth
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
