Mori Seiki Dura Vertical 1035 ECO Spindle Repair

The Mori Seiki Dura Vertical 1035 ECO is a high production CNC machining center. It can come fitted with this oil lubricated, stator driven spindle capable of running up to 12,000 RPM.

CHALLENGE

Our customer sent in this Mori Seiki Dura Vertical 1035 ECO spindle stating that the spindle had been noisy since they purchased the machine and had bad run out. When it arrived at Northland Tool we noted that the spindle was very noisy when spun by hand. After completing a full breakdown and evaluation, we found that the rear bearing had catastrophically failed and egged the housing ID and OD.

We also recorded that the ID 40 tooling taper was bell mouthed and had high run out along with very bad tool contact. Lastly, the drive dogs were heavily worn but can be fixed and used again.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Mori Seiki Dura Vertical 1035 ECO spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings, bolts, o-rings, bellevilles, grippers, and seals
Replace rotary union
Grind, plate, grind (GPG) the 40 ID tooling taper
GPG the rear bearing housing OD and ID
Weld and repair damaged drive dogs

RESULT

After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload, we put the spindle through a rigorous break-in and testing procedure to make sure it passes our final quality inspection. See below for the passing test reports:

The detailed cause of failure reports and the expert technical advice that Northland Tool provides is bar none the best I have ever seen. We struggled to keep two of our large our milling spindles running for longer than 6 to 12 months.
