CHALLENGE
This Okamoto OH-20M spindle was seized incoming. We noticed that the right rear corner of the dovetail mount was chipped. After disassembly, we noted that coolant contamination had caused corrosion of the spindle interior and failure of the front and rear bearings. A rear bearing cage was destroyed and the debris caused the rear labyrinth spacer to rub out on the rear cover. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and noted a few issues. First, the tooling pilot ID was oversized and had 30µ runout. Second, the pilot face had 15µ runout. Third, the drive pulley was worn and damaged and the pulley taper had 9µ runout.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Okamoto OH-20M spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Repair rubout damage to rear labyrinth spacer
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the tooling pilot ID
- Kiss grind pilot face and pulley taper
- Replace bearings, drive pulley, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

It’s a fact of machining — eventually, even top-of-the-line turning machines will experience a spindle failure. Spindles endure tension, torsion, heavy loads, and speeds up to and beyond 150,000 RPM, to name a few of the standard stressors.
