CHALLENGE
Upon initial inspection, this Okuma Cadet V4020 spindle’s bearings were very noisy when rotated by hand. After disassembly, our technician discovered that the front and rear lnpro seal bearing isolators had failed, and the rear bearing pair was heavily contaminated. Grease had almost completely washed out of the front bearing tri-set. The tooling taper ID measured with high runout. We also found that the gripper fingers exhibited severe wear on retention surfaces.
SOLUTION
All original parts were thoroughly cleaned before reassembly of the repaired Okuma Cadet V4020 spindle. This straightforward repair required replacement of all bearings, belleville washers, grippers, Inpro seals, o-rings, and assembly screws. We performed a kiss grind to the tooling taper ID to address runout.
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

It’s a fact of machining — eventually, even top-of-the-line turning machines will experience a spindle failure. Spindles endure tension, torsion, heavy loads, and speeds up to and beyond 150,000 RPM, to name a few of the standard stressors.
