Okuma Cadetmate Spindle Repair

Okuma Cadetmate Spindle Rebuild

Fretting is the repeated cyclical rubbing between two surfaces over a period of time which will remove material from one or both surfaces in contact. An associated problem occurs when the small particles removed by wear are oxidized in air. This is the rust colored discoloration you see in the picture below. The oxides are usually harder than the underlying metal, so wear accelerates as the harder particles abrade the metal surfaces further.

Possible cause of failure:

  • Front bearing failure from contamination
  • Outer race of the #1 bearing has severe fretting and 30 microns runout
  • Housing has severe fretting
  • Taper is out of ISO

Repair action:

  • Clean, inspect overall dimensions
  • Replace bearings, grippers, seals and bellevilles
  • Grind chrome plate and regrind front housing
  • Kiss grind 40 taper
  • Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in.
  • Final quality control inspection
