Okuma MC-V4020 Spindle Repair
The Okuma MC-V4020 is a popular vertical machining center capable of 3-axis machining. The 15-20HP direct drive spindle is capable of running up to 8,000 rpm and is equipped with a CAT40 tooling taper. This machine also has the option to come with a spindle that is capable of running up to 15,000 rpm and a CAT50 taper. The specific spindle we repaired is the 8,000 rpm option with a CAT40 taper.
CHALLENGE
When this Okuma MC-V4020 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics the first thing we noted was that the spindle was very loud when spun by hand. Upon disassembling the spindle it was found that the rear roller bearing had catastrophically failed and the front quadset of bearings felt rough when rotated. The gripper fingers were found to have significant wear on them and will need to be replaced. Then the critical dimensions (bearing journals, bearing shoulders, taper, etc.) were measured. The CAT40 ID taper was found to have a good amount of wear and greater than 6μm of runout. No other significant dimensional deviations were found throughout the spindle.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Okuma MC-V4020 spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace all bolts, o-rings, and bellevilles
- Replace gripper fingers
- Replace bearings
- Kiss grind CAT40 ID Taper
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
