The front bearing set in this spindle is obsolete. We modified the spindle shaft and housing to use standard angular contact bearings. This makes the spindle useful for many years to come.
Cause of failure:
The front roller bearing is an old design Pope special and quality exact replacement bearings are unavailable.
Spanner holes and threads damaged on nut.
Stator shows signs of overheating.
Tapers have 3 to 6 microns of run out.
Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
Change front bearing set
Manufacture a new sleeve for the bearing conversion.
Manufacture a new nut
Kiss grind tapers
Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in. Final quality control inspection.
