Quaser SKF Spindle from South Africa

CHALLENGE

This spindle was sent to us by our customer in South Africa. We support all types of machines in any location. Call us if you need help with shipping. Cause of failure: Rear roller bearing failure from coolant contamination, bearing cage destroyed & rolling elements loose in spindle. Rear housing cover & labyrinth full of sticky coolant residue. Rotary union is probably leaking. (2) threaded holes on OD of rear cover are unplugged, allowing contaminants to directly enter the labyrinth. Tooling taper has some pock-marked wear. Gripper fingers (collet) are worn.

SOLUTION

Repair action: Clean, inspect overall dimensions. Kiss grind tooling taper. Put set screws in (2) open holes in rear cover. Replace bearings, Bellevilles, gripper fingers, seals, o-rings & assembly screws. Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in. Final quality control inspection.
