Royal Master TG-12x4 Spindle Repair

The Royal Master TG-12×4 is a high accuracy centerless grinder. It comes fitted with this grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 2040 rpm.

CHALLENGE

Our customer sent in this Royal Master TG-12×4 spindle stating that they were having vibration problems with the spindle. When the spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics, the first things we noted were that the spindle spun freely by hand and passed our incoming run up tests. Once we got a tool from the customer, we found that the taper had bad contact. After disassembly and evaluation, we noted that the front bearings felt rough when spun by hand and the grease was slightly worn. Lastly, as stated before, the OD taper had bad contact and high runout. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Royal Master TG-12×4 spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the OD taper

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
