This Schneider HSC Smart XP spindle is grease lubricated, stator driven, and capable of running up to 3,500 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This spindle is used in the generation of the surfaces on ophthalmic lenses. It is similar to a lathe spindle in that it turns the workpiece. As is also common with the optical polishing spindles we rebuild, the spindle interior contained a significant amount of the slurry used in the cutting process. When the seals fail to exclude the slurry, the bearings suffer. The contaminant even reached the drawbar inside the spindle shaft, but fortunately the spindle motor was not affected.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Schneider HSC Smart XP spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace bearings, o-rings, and stainless steel assembly screws
- Replace bellevilles and seals
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

It’s a fact of machining — eventually, even top-of-the-line turning machines will experience a spindle failure. Spindles endure tension, torsion, heavy loads, and speeds up to and beyond 150,000 RPM, to name a few of the standard stressors.
