Setco 3502H-Y Spindle Repair

The Setco 3502H-Y spindle is grease lubricated, belt driven, and capable of running up to 7,700 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Setco 3502H-Y spindle was rough when spun by hand incoming. We measured high runouts on the front pilot and rear pulley surfaces incoming as well. The front housing ID was extremely corroded and caused the front shaft nut to lock up during disassembly. After completing the breakdown, we noted that the front shaft and housing nuts were damaged beyond repair due to corrosion. There was barely any grease remaining in the #3 rear bearings and all felt very rough/worn. We noted some dimensional deviations, such as the rear bearing shoulder on the shaft had high runout and the threads on the shaft nose were slightly damaged. No other significant dimensional deviations to note for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Setco 3502H-Y spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
Fabricate a new front housing nut and front shaft nut
Repair damaged threads on nose of shaft
Kiss grind the rear bearing shoulder, rear OD pulley journal, and front OD pilot

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
