Sharp 618-2A Spindle Repair
The Sharp 618-2A is an older surface grinding machine. It comes fitted with this grease lubricated and stator driven spindle capable of running up to 5,000 RPM.
This Sharp 618-2A spindle arrived at Northland Tool without the stator and it was very difficult to rotate by hand. During disassembly of the spindle it was noted that the spanner holes in the rear shaft nut were damaged due to corrosion build up. The inside of the spindle was filled with corrosion as well and there was no grease remaining in the bearings. Lastly, the front OD Taper had high run out as well as the front and rear bearing shoulders.
The following actions were performed on this Sharp 618-2A spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, bolts, and o-rings
- Grind, plate, grind (GPG) the front OD Taper
- Kiss Grind the front and rear bearing shoulders
- Weld and rework new spanner holes in rear shaft nut
After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload, we put the spindle through a rigorous break-in and testing procedure to make sure it passes our final quality inspection. See below for the passing test reports:
This spindle passed our final quality inspection and was returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
