Siemens 1PK3096-2AW90-Z Spindle Repair

Siemens 1PK3096-2AW90-Z Spindle Repair

The Siemens 1PK3096-2AW90-Z spindle is a grease-lubricated, stator-driven spindle that can run up to 5,800 RPM.

CHALLENGE

Our customer called in and stated their spindle had failed after only one month in use and that they were sending it in for evaluation.  As soon as the spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics it was noted that it was difficult to turn by hand and felt very rough.  Upon breaking down the spindle we found that the middle pair of bearings had failed and showed signs of coolant contamination.  Because of the middle bearing failure, the middle bearing shoulder had high runout and would need to be addressed.  The front bearing journal also showed signs of light damage.  There were no other critical surface (housing, taper, etc.) deviations to note in the spindle.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Siemens 1PK3096-2AW90-Z spindle:

  • Clean all parts of the spindle
  • Replace all bolts and o-rings
  • Replace bearings
  • Grind-Plate-Grind (GPG) the front bearing journal
  • Kiss grind the middle bearing journal shoulder

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
