This Studer S20 Workhead spindle is hydrodynamic lubricated, belt driven, and capable of running up to 1,200 rpm.
CHALLENGE
Our customer indicated that the hydrodynamic Studer S20 Workhead spindle had seized up during operation. Once it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics, we noted that the rear housing nut was loose incoming and the customer did not provide the spindle front cover. The tapered spindle shaft was locked up onto the bronze oil bearings, most likely from being bumped or crashed. Lastly, the rear shoulder of spindle shaft had excessive runout of 10µ. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Studer S20 Workhead spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Kiss grind the rear shoulder of the spindle shaft
- Replace seals, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
