Takisawa TA-25Y Spindle Repair

The Takisawa TA-25Y is a CNC turning center. It can come fitted with a grease lubricated and pulley driven spindle that is capable of running up to 4,500 rpm.

CHALLENGE

Our customer sent in this Takisawa TA-25Y spindle indicating that there was excessive runout where the collet actuator bolts to the pulley. The spindle was locked up incoming and there was a 2mm gap behind front cover. There were holes drilled in the front covers and jacking screws snapped off as well. Looking specifically at the pulley, the pulley and pulley nut were loose incoming. The pulley ID was worn oversized and the pulley journal OD was tapered and undersized -10/-50µ. Total deviation between the pulley ID and the pulley journal OD was >250µ. Only one mating surface can be plated and ground. Lastly, one spindle brake caliper and brake pad mounting arm were broken, likely due to installation with short mounting bolts.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Takisawa TA-25Y spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the pulley journal OD oversized
Kiss grind the fretting damage to pulley ID
Remove broken screws and rework damage to front cover and labyrinth cover
Repair spindle brake caliper and brake pad mounting arm, reinstall with longer mounting bolts
Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
